Generative Musical Dice
Musikalisches Würfelspiel (Musical Dice Game) was a 18th Century compositional game. Pre-composed segments of music were arranged and each one was attributed to outcomes of a dice roll, or in some cases just the selection of a random number. Each new number would select the next segment of music.
This project uses Markov Chains to select the next note in sequence, from a selection of pre-determined pieces of composed music from varying composers.
There are two main controls. One stochastically selects a tempo and the other selects the MIDI data file the Markov chain reads from. This allows the user to 'compose' a piece, relinquishing control of the notes themselves and instead guiding the piece.
It has an 'automated' function where it will automate the control functions. The MIDI data files of composed music can be easily swapped for others, allowing the Markov chain to read from these. This function allows a composer to input their own musical fragments and then generate new, inspiring ideas.
'Epoch' was composed using this tool to generate MIDI data.
